Writing Prompts

I’ve started up a new Writing Prompts section of this site. With any luck, I’ll find the determination and motivation to continue working with it.

The idea is to begin posting prompts for myself (and other writers, of course) to get me writing a few times a week, even if only for a few paragraphs.

But my ultimate goal is to provide productive prompts that launch a writer into a real scene rather than simply having them describe an object in five sentences or write a recollection using specifically assigned words. I want to set up situations, introduce people or places, instigate action – whatever it takes to help a writer truly get going.

These prompts should serve to kick start a scene with the possibility of actually being able to use it in future works. I don’t want writers  (or myself) to feel like they’re completing a third grade “busy-work” assignment.

So I invite everyone to participate in the prompts, to share your results with me and anyone else who lurks about. You don’t have to be a writer. You might just have a clever, funny, horrifying, or disturbing idea that fits the prompt perfectly and you wanna see what kinds of reactions it can draw from others. Go for it! I’ll be posting my own results with each prompt that I put up.

Now, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see if I managed to convince anyone to join me. There is now a permanent link in the Navigation Bar at the top. Enjoy!
